As the festive season approaches, we are reminded of the warmth of community and the spirit of giving. This year, we invite you to join us in making a difference in the lives of those we serve at Belknap House. Last year, your generous donations helped us to provide 3,507 bednights to children and 6,502 total bednights to families who experienced homelessness.
The mission of Belknap House is to help families become independent and self-sufficient. We are proud to share Betty’s story of resilience and hope.
Betty, a dedicated grandmother and provider, took on the responsibility of raising her two grandchildren when her daughter lost custody of them. A decision rooted in love that changed the trajectory of their lives.
For years, Betty provided a home filled with love for her grandchildren. Hard work combined with a willingness to sacrifice always helped make ends meet. When her grandchildren turned 12 and 17 years old, Betty learned that the property where they were residing was being sold. She was given three months’ notice to find another apartment, which seemed like a reasonable amount of time. Not in her wildest dreams did Betty imagine that she and her two grandchildren would be without a place to live.
Unable to find an affordable apartment, and nowhere else to go, the family turned to Belknap House in search of a safe and stable environment. The oldest of the two grandchildren took a room offered by an extended family member, while Betty and her grandson came to live at Belknap House.
As a resident, Betty took full advantage of our educational classes: Financial Fitness, Understanding Behavior (parenting class), and Cooking Matters. Since Betty’s first day here, she consistently worked toward the family’s goal to be reunited. On April 2, 2024, that dream was realized when the family of 3 moved into Belknap House II where they continue to receive vital support and access to our mentoring program. Equipped with these resources, Betty has navigated complex systems, coordinated healthcare for every member of the family, and stayed focused on their goal: finding a permanent, stable home for her grandchildren and herself.
In September, Betty learned that her family’s application to the Laconia’s Housing Choice Voucher Program was accepted. Betty’s perseverance and determination have been fueled and guided by the love of family. The staff and volunteers of Belknap House, along with our community partners, are grateful to be a part of this family’s success.
Thank you for your kindness and support. Every contribution, no matter how small, has a tremendous impact on the children and families we serve.
