Just over two years ago, Betty and her two grandchildren arrived at Belknap House II. They were the first family to move from Belknap House to BHII, an extension of our shelter program which acknowledges the growth and achievements of families who have demonstrated readiness for success. As a resident, Betty participated in all our in-house programs: Financial Fitness, Understanding Behavior (parenting class), Cooking Matters classes, as well as many of our seminar presentations.
Betty’s journey occurs at a time when at both the state and national levels, there has been an increase in homelessness, a scarcity of affordable housing, and a challenging economic climate that has intensified the demands upon our shelter and the services that we provide. Betty has not traveled alone. Belknap House has provided Betty and her family with the vital support of case management and access to our mentoring program. Equipped with these resources, she has navigated complex systems, coordinated healthcare for every member of the family, and stayed focused on finding a permanent, stable home for her family.
This spring, the Laconia Housing Authority notified Betty that she had been awarded a Housing Choice Voucher. On October 16th, she embarked on a new chapter in the life of her family in an apartment of their own. Betty’s perseverance and determination have been fueled and guided by the love of family.
The staff and volunteers of Belknap House, along with our community partners, are grateful to be a part of this family’s success.
